Hong Kong (AFP) Dec 1, 2008 All the gunmen who carried out the Mumbai attacks that left 172 people dead were from neighbouring Pakistan, India's deputy home minister told the BBC in an interview on Monday. "The terrorists who have been killed in these encounters in Mumbai in the last few days were of Pakistani origin," Shakeel Ahmad said. It was the most explicit statement yet from an Indian official about the identities of the attackers, who wreaked havoc in India's commercial capital with a brazen coordinated assault on around a dozen sites. The minister said the lone gunman arrested after the attacks was also from Pakistan and had provided "information in detail" that they were all Pakistani nationals, including their names and other data. "We are not saying that it is sponsored by the Pakistan government," Ahmad said. But he insisted that Pakistan was "being used for anti-India activities." The two nuclear-armed neighbours, who have fought three wars and nearly came to a fourth after an attack on the Indian parliament blamed on a Pakistan militant group, have been involved in a slow-moving peace process since 2004. The task can become nearly impossible when the systems acquire poor facial images-a situation that occurs all too often in real-world environments. |
