China's Mystery Spacelab
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jan 20, 2010
We could be less than a year away from the launch of Tiangong-1, China's first space laboratory. We've been expecting this launch for years, but relatively little is still known about this mission. We have grown used to seeing computer-generated artwork of this small, stubby laboratory module, not much larger than the Shenzhou crew-carrying spacecraft that will dock with it. China Central Television has also broadcast short video clips showing the module undergoing assembly, and periodically, a short news report on the mission pops up in the Chinese media. Beyond this, not much is really known about Tiangong. We don't even know if the launch will take place this year or in 2011. The Chinese themselves probably don't know for sure at this stage. ... read more

Opportunity Leaving Marquette Behind
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 20, 2010
Sols 2118-2124 - Opportunity spent Sols 2118 to 2121 (Jan. 7-11, 2010; no sol number corresponds to Jan. 8 because no noon at Opportunity's location fell during that date's 24 hours Pacific Standard Time) completing the investigation of "Marquette Island," a curious rock on the plains of Meridiani. The alpha particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) and the microscopic imager (MI) were used to ex ... more

Spirit Still Stuck
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 20, 2010
Sols 2137-2143 - Spirit remains embedded at the location called "Troy" on the West side of Home Plate. Extrication drives were tried on sols 2138, 2140 and 2142 (Jan. 7, 9 and 11, 2010). Each of these drives employed a new technique of steering the wheels back and forth before driving. This has shown some efficacy at sweeping material out of the wheel tracks and allowing fresh materi ... more

PVAMU Scientists Add "Moon Mud" To Lunar Radiation Shielding Studies
Prairie View TX (SPX) Jan 19, 2010
Barely two months after NASA intentionally crashed the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) into the moon's southern polar region and discovered water, faculty and student researchers from the NASA Center for Radiation Engineering and Science for Space Exploration (CRESSE) at Prairie View A and M University are already investigating how moisture content might alter the radiati ... more

Looking For Life In The Multiverse
Miami FL (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
Is there anybody out there? In Alejandro Jenkins' case, the question refers not to whether life exists elsewhere in the universe, but whether it exists in other universes outside of our own. While that might be a mind-blowing concept for the layperson to ponder, it's all in a day's work for Jenkins, a postdoctoral associate in theoretical high-energy physics at The Florida State University ... more

China launches orbiter for navigation system: state media
Beijing (AFP) Jan 17, 2010
China launched an orbiter into space early Sunday, the latest stage in the development of its own satellite navigation system, state media said. The orbiter, launched at about 00:12 am (1612 GMT Saturday) was the third orbiter that China has launched for its Beidou Navigation System, Xinhua news agency said. "(The orbiter) will join another two already in orbits to form a network which will eventually have a total of 35 satellites, capable of providing global navigation service to users around the world around 2020. ... more

Tooling Up ExoMars
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 19, 2010
ESA and NASA are inviting scientists from across the world to propose instruments for their joint Mars mission, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Scheduled for launch in 2016, the spacecraft will focus on understanding the rarest constituents of the martian atmosphere, including the mysterious methane that could signal life on Mars. Establishing whether life ever existed, or is still active on Mars today, is one of the outstanding scientific quests of our time. Both missions in the ExoMars programme will address this important goal. The first spacecraft is the Trace Gas Orbiter, which ESA will build and NASA will launch. ... more
