Tooling Up ExoMars
Paris, France (ESA) Jan 19, 2010
ESA and NASA are inviting scientists from across the world to propose instruments for their joint Mars mission, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Scheduled for launch in 2016, the spacecraft will focus on understanding the rarest constituents of the martian atmosphere, including the mysterious methane that could signal life on Mars. Establishing whether life ever existed, or is still active on Mars today, is one of the outstanding scientific quests of our time. Both missions in the ExoMars programme will address this important goal. The first spacecraft is the Trace Gas Orbiter, which ESA will build and NASA will launch. ... read more

NASA's Rosetta "Alice" Spectrometer Reveals Earth's UV Fingerprint
Boulder CO (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
On November 13, the European Space Agency's comet orbiter spacecraft, Rosetta, swooped by Earth for its third and final gravity assist on the way to humankind's first rendezvous to orbit and study a comet in more detail than has ever been attempted. One of the instruments aboard Rosetta is the NASA-funded ultraviolet spectrometer, Alice, which is designed to probe the composition of the ... more

That Sinking Feeling Ebbs Away At Spirit
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 15, 2010
Spirit remains embedded at the location called "Troy" on the West side of Home Plate. Extrication drives were tried on sols 2138, 2140 and 2142 (Jan. 7, 9 and 11, 2010). Each of these drives employed a new technique of steering the wheels back and forth before driving. This has shown some efficacy at sweeping material out of the wheel tracks and allowing fresh material ... more

NASA Revises Bdget For Displaying Retired Shuttles
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
NASA has issued a follow-up Request for Information, or RFI, for ideas from education institutions, science museums and other appropriate organizations about the community's ability to acquire and publicly display orbiters after the conclusion of the Space Shuttle Program. The original RFI in December 2008 noted that a potential shuttle recipient would have to pay an estimated $42 million ... more

Dune Symmetry Inside Martian Crater
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 15, 2010
Dunes of sand-sized materials have been trapped on the floors of many Martian craters. This is one example, from a crater in Noachis Terra, west of the giant Hellas impact basin. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this view on Dec. 28, 2009. The dunes here are linear, thought to be due to shifting wind directi ... more

The Floor Of Tycho Crater
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 15, 2010
Tycho Crater is an one of the most prominent craters on the moon. It appears as a bright spot in the southern highlands with rays of bright material that stretch across much of the nearside. Its prominence is not due to its size: at 85 km in diameter, it's just one among thousands of this size or larger. What really makes Tycho stand out is its relative youth. It formed recently enough tha ... more
