That Sinking Feeling Ebbs Away At Spirit
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 15, 2010
Spirit remains embedded at the location called "Troy" on the West side of Home Plate. Extrication drives were tried on sols 2138, 2140 and 2142 (Jan. 7, 9 and 11, 2010). Each of these drives employed a new technique of steering the wheels back and forth before driving. This has shown some efficacy at sweeping material out of the wheel tracks and allowing fresh material to slough off the leading trench face providing traction under the wheel. Slower wheel speeds were also tried on two of the drives. However, even with these new techniques, little forward progress has been achieved. And excessive sinkage continues to occur with each attempt. ... read more

Russian Cosmonauts Take Spacewalk
Moscow, Russia (XNA) Jan 15, 2010
Two Russian cosmonauts at the International Space Station (ISS) began a spacewalk on Thursday, the Mission Control Center outside Moscow said. The spacewalk, started at 01:05 p.m. Moscow time (1005 GMT) and will last for about six hours, is intended to prepare new docking port. Astronauts Maxim Surayev and Oleg Kotov will run cables for the integration of the Poisk study module into ... more

The Floor Of Tycho Crater
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 15, 2010
Tycho Crater is an one of the most prominent craters on the moon. It appears as a bright spot in the southern highlands with rays of bright material that stretch across much of the nearside. Its prominence is not due to its size: at 85 km in diameter, it's just one among thousands of this size or larger. What really makes Tycho stand out is its relative youth. It formed recently enough tha ... more

VLT Captures First Direct Spectrum Of An Exoplanet
Paris, France (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
By studying a triple planetary system that resembles a scaled-up version of our own Sun's family of planets, astronomers have been able to obtain the first direct spectrum - the "chemical fingerprint" - of a planet orbiting a distant star, thus bringing new insights into the planet's formation and composition. The result represents a milestone in the search for life elsewhere in the Universe. ... more

Dangerous Asteroid Safely Flies Past Earth
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jan 14, 2010
An asteroid named 2010 AL30 whose unusual orbit frightened astronomers two days ago safely flew past Earth at a distance of 130,000 km (80,796 miles) on Wednesday. The asteroid some 10-15 meters long with parameters similar to a man-made object was discovered by the LINEAR survey of MIT's Lincoln Laboratories last Sunday. "The asteroid posed no danger anyway," said astronomer Leonid ... more

Hints Of Hesperian Lakes
London, UK (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published in the journal Geology. The research, by a team from Imperial College London and University College London (UCL), suggests that during the Hesperian Epoch, appro ... more

Just A Few More Approaches To Try For Extrication
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 14, 2010
The list of remaining maneuvers being considered for extricating Spirit is becoming shorter. Results are being analyzed Wednesday, Jan. 13, from a drive on Sol 2143 (Jan. 12, 2010) using intentionally very slow rotation of the wheels. Earlier drives in the past two weeks using wheel wiggles and slow wheel rotation produced only negligible progress toward extricating Spirit. The right ... more
