The U.S. space agency and Saudi Arabia say they've signed a joint agreement calling for collaboration in lunar and asteroid science research. The agreement between NASA and Saudi Arabia's King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology recognizes the Saudi Lunar and Near-Earth Object Science Center as an affiliate partner with the NASA Lunar Science Institute at NASA's Ames Research ... more

First Super-Earths Discovered Around Sun-Like Stars
Washington DC (SPX) Dec 16, 2009
Two nearby stars have been found to harbor "super-Earths" - rocky planets larger than the Earth but smaller than ice giants such as Uranus and Neptune. Unlike previously discovered stars with super-Earths, both of the stars are similar to the Sun, suggesting to scientists that low-mass planets may be common around nearby stars. "Over the last 12 years or so nearly 400 planets have been ... more

NASA's WISE Eye On The Universe Begins All-Sky Survey Mission
Vandenberg AFB CA (SPX) Dec 15, 2009
NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, lifted off over the Pacific Ocean this morning on its way to map the entire sky in infrared light. A Delta II rocket carrying the spacecraft launched at 6:09 a.m. PST (9:09 a.m. EST) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The rocket deposited WISE into a polar orbit 326 miles above Earth. "WISE thundered overhead, lighting up the pre-dawn skies," said William Irace, the mission's project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. ... more

Biosatellite To The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Dec 15, 2009
If we hope to return astronauts to the Moon in the future, we need to carry out a lot of preparations. Sure, NASA and other agencies are working on hardware that could take us there. But we also need to investigate the potential impact of the Moon on the astronauts themselves. Biological studies of the lunar environment have barely been carried out. It's obvious that astronauts can survive ... more

Martian Moon Duo
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 14, 2009
For the very first time, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos have been caught on camera together. ESA's Mars Express orbiter took these pioneering images last month. Apart from their 'wow' factor, these unique images will help the HRSC team validate and refine existing orbit models of the two moons. The images were acquired with the Super Resolution Channel (SRC) of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). ... more
