Views Of The World Under The Moon
Oberhausen, Germany (SPX) Dec 10, 2009
The dimensions are impressive. In the spacious arena of the Gasometer Oberhausen, visitors stand under the largest Moon on Earth. The giant sculpture almost fills their entire field of vision. The balloon, with a diameter of 25 metres, appears to float in the half-light. It is a quasi-realistic reproduction of the Earth's satellite. The lighting effects show the phases of the Moon from new ... more

Life On Mars Theory Boosted By New Methane Study
London, UK (SPX) Dec 09, 2009
Scientists have ruled out the possibility that methane is delivered to Mars by meteorites, raising fresh hopes that the gas might be generated by life on the red planet, in research published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters. Methane has a short lifetime of just a few hundred years on Mars because it is constantly being depleted by a chemical reaction in the planet's atmosphere ... more

Branson unveils Virgin Galactic spaceliner
Los Angeles (AFP) Dec 7, 2009
Richard Branson unveiled Monday a commercial spaceliner offering tourists a cheaper chance to experience the thrill of weightlessness and view the splendor of the Earth from space. The British billionaire hopes to offer tickets aboard his spacecraft at a cost of 200,000 dollars each, giving adventurous, well-heeled travellers a chance to experience space for a fraction of the cost of a seat on a NASA shuttle or Russian spaceship. Announcing the roll-out of the Virgin Galactic spaceliner in California's Mojave desert, Branson said he planned to be on the craft's first passenger flight some 18 months from now, accompanied by his family and the American designer of the space ship, Burt Rutan. ... more
