Martian Moon Duo
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 14, 2009
For the very first time, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos have been caught on camera together. ESA's Mars Express orbiter took these pioneering images last month. Apart from their 'wow' factor, these unique images will help the HRSC team validate and refine existing orbit models of the two moons. The images were acquired with the Super Resolution Channel (SRC) of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). The camera took 130 images of the moons on 5 November at 9:14 CET over period of 1.5 minutes at intervals of 1s, speeding up to 0.5-s intervals toward the end. ... read more

Saturnian Satellite Iapetus Is Coated With Foreign Dust
Ithica NY (SPX) Dec 11, 2009
Iapetus is often called Saturn's most bizarre moon, due to its starkly contrasting hemispheres - one black as coal, the other white as snow. Images taken by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft, orbiting Saturn since 2004, offer the most compelling evidence to date of why and how the moon got its yin-yang appearance, as well as clues to how other such satellites might have formed in the early universe ... more

The Meandering Channels Of Mars
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 11, 2009
The surface of Mars is littered with channels that appear to be the work of ancient water flows. Indeed, some of these channels meander back and forth like slow-moving streams on our planet. Channels can be carved by lava, wind and glaciers, but these processes can't explain all the features on Mars. "We've gotten over the hump and can now agree that water flowed on the martian surface in ... more

Is There Life On The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Dec 10, 2009
Scientists are looking for life in space. So far, they haven't found any life beyond Earth itself. We seem to be getting closer to discovering life somewhere else in our own solar system, with Mars, and some moons of Jupiter and Saturn being considered likely hiding spots for microbes. Could there be life closer to our home planet? Probably not, but it's worth considering what could be ... more

Life On Mars Theory Boosted By New Methane Study
London, UK (SPX) Dec 09, 2009
Scientists have ruled out the possibility that methane is delivered to Mars by meteorites, raising fresh hopes that the gas might be generated by life on the red planet, in research published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters. Methane has a short lifetime of just a few hundred years on Mars because it is constantly being depleted by a chemical reaction in the planet's atmosphere ... more

Rear Wheel Trouble Continues For Mars Rover Spirit
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 11, 2009
Results of diagnostic tests on Spirit's right-rear wheel on Sol 2109 (Dec. 8, 2009) continue to indicate a troubled wheel, which may leave the rover with only four operable wheels. The Sol 2109 plan included a check of the grind motor of Spirit's rock abrasion tool (RAT) because it shares the same motor controller as the right-rear wheel. It also included rotor resistance tests on th ... more
