A species of flying frog discovered in southern Vietnam whose tadpoles have strange black fangs has been dubbed the "vampire" flying frog, researchers say.

A scientist from the Australian Museum in Sydney who discovered the species says the "flying" part is because it uses its webbed toes to glide between treetops, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.

But it's the fangs sported by the tadpoles that puzzle Jodi Rowley.

"We don't know of anything quite like this, that's for sure, so we're taking a lot of time to work out why on Earth they have these fangs," Rowley said.

"Maybe it's got something to do with what they eat.

"They breed in very small pools of water that are found in the holes in the trunks of trees, so maybe they eat something particularly strange up there," she said.
