Ukraine urges Chinese companies to invest in war-torn country
Ukraine urges Chinese companies to invest in war-torn country

Kyiv, Ukraine (AFP) June 6, 2024

A Ukrainian diplomat visiting China urged state and private companies to work more closely with the war-torn country and boost trade and investment, Kyiv's foreign ministry said Wednesday.

First deputy foreign minister Andriy Sybiga met with representatives of 13 state-owned and private companies in Shanghai, the ministry said.

Sybiga "called on Chinese companies to take a more active part in helping Ukraine, in particular in developing trade and investment relations", it added.

One topic discussed was the possible participation of international business in rebuilding war-damaged infrastructure.

Chinese companies said they wanted to increase cooperation and invest in specific projects, the Ukrainian ministry said.

Sybiga on Wednesday attended consultations with his Chinese counterpart and asked Beijing officials to attend Ukraine's Peace Summit in Switzerland this month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the weekend accused China of "working hard to prevent countries from coming to the peace summit", after he personally invited President Xi Jinping.

China positions itself as a neutral party in the conflict, which it has never condemned and in which it has sought to frame itself as a mediator.

China has said it is not supplying weapons to either side, but it has become Russia's main economic partner over the last two years after Moscow was hit by broad Western sanctions.

China factory activity contracts for first time in three months
Beijing (AFP) May 31, 2024

The manufacturing purchasing manager's index (PMI) - a key measure of factory output - dipped to 49.5 last month, from April's 50.4, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The reading was also short of the 50.5 forecast in a Bloomberg survey. A figure below 5 ... read more
