US will help seal Israel-Palestinian peace: Jordan

by Staff Writers
Amman (AFP) May 21, 2011
Peace between Israel and the Palestinians will be sealed with US help, Jordan's King Abdullah II said on Saturday as he urged American businessmen to invest in his country.

"Jordan's commitment to the future is secure. It has driven our long work for regional peace... and with America's help, peace will succeed," said the Jordanian monarch who held talks this week in Washington with US officials.

Abdullah II did not provide any reasons for his optimism.

His remarks come a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lectured US President Barack Obama at the Oval Office against chasing what he called a Middle East peace "based on illusions.

Netanyahu emphatically vowed Israel would never return to its 1967 borders and laid down a set of non-negotiable conditions for peace talks -- a day after Obama called on Israel to accept a return to territorial lines in place before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, with mutual land swaps with Palestinians to frame a secure peace.

The Jordanian monarch meanwhile invited US business to invest in his country.

"Our same belief in the future is driving our determination to open the doors of enterprise and opportunity," he said.

"But we cannot do it alone. We need partners, to build prosperity that lasts -- in my country, and in my region," he said stressing the region offered 350 million consumers and vast potential.

Commentary: Israel: So Nu?
Washington (UPI) May 20, 2011
For Israel, it wasn't an "Oy Gevalt" moment of fear, shock and amazement but more of an "Oy Vey" exclamation of exasperated dismay. U.S. President Barack Obama, a few hours before meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, trotted out a recycled Saudi peace plan, circa 2002. After all, Special Envoy for Mideast Peace George Mitchell recently resigned after two years of comm ... read more
