US hails more NATO states meeting defense spending target

The United States on Wednesday hailed NATO's announcement that 18 members have met a defense spending target, following threats by Donald Trump to encourage Russia to attack allies that do not spend enough.

"I think it's incredibly important," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters of the NATO spending estimates unveiled earlier in Brussels.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that 18 of 31 members were meeting the alliance's goal of spending two percent of gross domestic product on defense -- up from 11 last year and just three in 2014.

"We continue to see progress from other countries towards meeting those targets, and we will urge those who have not yet met them to continue to take steps to do so," Miller said.

"NATO is an alliance that the the American people derive tremendous benefit from (and) provides tremendous security to the United States," Miller said.

18 NATO states to hit spending target in 2024: Stoltenberg
Brussels (AFP) Feb 14, 2024 - NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that 18 of the alliance's 31 countries are set to meet the defence spending target of two percent of gross domestic product in 2024.

The release of the new estimates came after Donald Trump rattled the alliance by saying he would "encourage" Russia to attack members who were not meeting the obligation.

NATO's secretary general told journalists that the number of states reaching the target had increased sharply from 11 last year.

"That is another record number and a six-fold increase from 2014 when only three allies met the target," Stoltenberg said.

Overall European allies and Canada will have added more than $600 billion to their defence spending since they set the two-percent target a decade ago, he said.

Spurred on by Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine in 2022, last year saw an "unprecedented rise" of 11 percent of spending by European members and Canada, the NATO chief added.

Stoltenberg reiterated a warning to Trump not to "undermine" NATO's collective security guarantee that all allies will help defend any member attacked.

"We should leave no room for miscalculation or misunderstanding in Moscow, about our readiness and our commitment, our resolve to protect allies," he said.
