London (AFP) Feb 9, 2011 Two British soldiers were shot and killed in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence announced, bringing the British death toll from military operations in the country to 354. "It is my very sad duty to report the loss of two soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment and 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment this morning," said military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel David Eastman. "The soldiers were patrolling an area in the north of Nad-e Ali District (in Helmand province) when they were hit by small arms fire from which they both subsequently died." A total of six British soldiers have died in Afghanistan this year. Britain has about 9,500 troops in the country, making it the second-largest contributor after the United States to the NATO-led coalition. Based in central Helmand, British forces are battling Taliban insurgents and training local security forces.
