Shanghai (AFP) Sept 13, 2010 California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday he hoped China would invest in his state's future high-speed rail network as he wrapped up a trade mission to the world's second-largest economy. The western US state, which is China's fourth largest trading partner, is looking to build a system by 2030 that will carry 90 million passengers a year, with a Los Angeles-San Francisco line at the heart of the network. "We want China, for instance, to invest in our high-speed rail, to build high-speed rail, to be part of this bidding process we are going to go through," Schwarzenegger said in a speech in Shanghai. "Many countries will be bidding to build high-speed rail. And we are also looking for financing from China," he said, lauding the "great potential" for increasing trade between China and California. Schwarzenegger arrived in China last week at the start of a six-day trade mission to Asia that will also take him to Japan and South Korea. He was due to see Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan upon arrival in Tokyo later Monday. On Sunday, he announced during a visit to the World Expo in Shanghai that his state would bid to host the 2020 Expo in the technology hub of Silicon Valley -- home to many of the world's leading IT firms. A formal hosting application will be submitted next year, with a decision expected in 2012. "Shanghai demonstrated that when you host the World Expo, the world comes to you and I want the world to come to California," he said Sunday. The Hollywood star and former bodybuilder is travelling with nearly 100 leaders from sectors including technology, tourism and entertainment. The governor, whose state has been hit hard by the global recession, had vowed before the trip that he would act as a "salesman-in-chief" for California in a bid to better tap growing Asian markets such as China. On Monday, officials from China and California signed four memoranda of understanding to boost cooperation on cutting greenhouse gas emissions and spurring investment growth. "California companies will soon be working closer with Chinese companies and new frontiers in technology exchange and venture capital investment will be realised," Schwarzenegger said. The three Asian countries on the California governor's itinerary are key trade partners of his state. In 2009, California exported 120 billion dollars worth of goods to more than 220 foreign markets, including 27 billion dollars to China, Japan and South Korea. Schwarzenegger is due to step down as governor in November after seven years in office.
