Ridley Scott unfazed by volcano shoot
by Staff Writers
Reykjavik (AFP) July 11, 2011

Acclaimed director Ridley Scott began on Monday shooting scenes for his next film at the foot of an Icelandic volcano that may be stirring to life, but appeared unfazed by the prospect of an eruption.

"When you do my job, nothing shakes you up," Scott told reporters late Sunday when asked about filming part of "Prometheus" near Hekla, a volcano experts warned last week was ready to blow.

Actors Charlize Theron, Michael Fessbender, Guy Pearce and Noomi Rapace are in Iceland for the two-week shoot.

The Oscar-winning director of "Blade Runner," "Gladiator," "Thelma and Louise" said he was drawn to Iceland because of its rugged landscapes.

"You can get that elsewhere, in California and in the Mojave desert, but this is more savage I think. It's got its own definitive character," he said, describing Iceland as "primeordial, jurassic, basic, beautiful."

"I like the black rock and ... no trees," he added.

"Prometheus" is set to hit screens in the United States in June 2012.

Experts warned last week Iceland's Helka volcano was "ready to erupt," with measurements indicating magma movement. Activity later subsided but an expert warned Monday it still could go at any time.

"Hekla always gives a very short warning so if something happens there it will happen very fast," Gunnar Gudmundsson, a geophysicist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told AFP.
