Resupply spacecraft prepared for Tiangong station after safe crew return

The China Manned Space Agency is preparing to launch the unmanned Shenzhou XXII spacecraft, which will deliver provisions and equipment to the Tiangong space station. A senior engineer confirmed on Saturday that teams are actively testing rocket systems, spaceship hardware, and preparing various payloads for the mission.

The Shenzhou XXII cargo mission will dock with Tiangong after launch. Originally scheduled for crew transfer in April 2026, it has now been repurposed as a standby crew ship, following recent developments in the Chinese space program.

On Friday, the Shenzhou XX astronauts returned to Earth using the Shenzhou XXI spacecraft, which was held in reserve. The Shenzhou XXII spacecraft is now designated for emergency readiness. Engineers detected minor cracks on the viewport window of the Shenzhou XX return capsule, likely caused by impacts from space debris.

The returning crew spent 204 days in orbit, the longest duration for any Chinese mission to date. Currently, the astronauts are in medical quarantine for health checks, and they will be available for public comment after this period.

Chinese mission planners maintain backup rockets and spacecraft to address emergencies. Protocols allow for rapid launch preparations to provide immediate in-orbit support when required.

On this flight, four mice transported to Tiangong on Nov 1 returned to Earth with the astronauts. The animals were delivered to the Chinese Academy of Sciences for post-mission evaluations. Researchers reported the mice adapted quickly to terrestrial gravity and resumed normal feeding.

Scientists will study the rodents' stress responses and physiological adaptation to space conditions. These investigations aim to improve understanding of how microgravity affects living systems.

Additional samples - including zebrafish, hornwort, streptomyces, planarians, and brain organoids - were brought down for analysis. Science teams have begun detailed assessments of these biological and combustion experiment specimens.

China's Shenzhou-20 astronauts return to Earth after delay
Beijing (AFP) Nov 14, 2025
Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth on Friday, state TV footage showed, after a delay caused by their spacecraft being struck by debris in orbit. The Tiangong space station, the crown jewel of China's space programme, is crewed by teams of three astronauts who are exchanged every six months. The return of the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft and crew were planned for November 5, after the Shenzhou-21 mission arrived to relieve them. However, because of a debris strike their return was delayed. ... read more
