Quake hits Indonesia: US seismologists

by Staff Writers
Jakarta (AFP) Dec 23, 2010
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Indonesia's Sumatra island Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

There was no tsunami warning.

The moderate quake struck at a depth of 52 kilometres (32 miles) at 7:01am (0001 GMT) 190 kilometres southeast of Banda Aceh, near the site of a devastating quake in December 2004 that triggered the Asian tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity.
