The Dutch Navy's logistics support ship HNLMS Amsterdam is being transferred to the Navy of Peru under a recently signed agreement.

The ship, which came into service in the 1990s, is 544 feet long, displaces 17,040 tons and has a speed of 21 knots.

"This vessel, displacing over 17,000 tons, will become the largest logistic support ship in the navy, and its large transport capacity for food, clothing and medicine, thanks to its large refrigerators and storage spaces, will allow it to support different regions along the coast," the Peruvian Navy said.

"This ship does not only have large capacity storage for fuel, water and food; it also is equipped with a hangar and flight deck to operate two medium and one light helicopter, with which it can perform tasks ranging from aero-medical evacuation to support of relief operations after a natural disaster."

The agreement for the transfer was signed last week in Peru by officials of both countries. No information was disclosed, however, on any financial arrangements or a delivery schedule for the ship, which was built by the Netherland's Schelde Group.
