Pakistan air strikes kill 28 militants: officials

New Afghanistan president to visit China
Kabul (AFP) Oct 21, 2014 - Afghanistan's new President Ashraf Ghani will head to China next week for a three-day visit, his office said in a statement Tuesday, his first trip abroad since being sworn in last month.

Ghani will be accompanied by a high ranking Afghan government delegation for his first overseas trip since he took office in late September following a prolonged political stand-off over the results of the fraud-tainted presidential election.

"On official invitation by the president of People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, president Ashraf Ghani along with a high ranking government delegation, will leave for Chinese capital Beijing next week," the statement said without specifying the date.

During his visit, the Afghan president will hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other Chinese leaders and sign agreements on bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries, the statement added.

China, which shares a 76 kilometre (47 mile) border with Afghanistan's far northeast, has a keen interest in Afghanistan's mineral resources and has already secured major oil and copper mining concessions in Afghanistan, which is believed to have more than $1 trillion worth of minerals.

The Asian giant is also increasingly seen as a key player in maintaining stability in Afghanistan, particularly after US troops pull out by the end of this year.

All NATO combat operations will finish by the end of 2014, with about 12,000 troops staying on into next year on a follow-up training and support mission.

Pakistan's military Tuesday said it had killed 28 militants in air strikes in the restive tribal region near the Afghan border, a region where it has been battling Islamist groups for more than a decade.

The strikes, that also killed a number of foreign fighters, took place on Tuesday in Dattakhel area of North Waziristan district, a stronghold of Taliban-linked groups, the military said in a statement.

Pakistan has been battling Islamist groups in its semi-autonomous tribal belt since 2004 after its army entered the region to search for Al-Qaeda fighters that had fled across the border following the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

In June, the army began an operation in the North Waziristan agency after a bloody raid on Karachi Airport ended faltering peace talks between the government and militants.

North Waziristan is a major base for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistani Taliban), which began it's campaign against the state in 2007 and also provides shelter to a number of foreign militant groups.

The United States has long called for action against militant groups in North Waziristan who have used the area as a staging post for attacks against NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Pakistan's army says it has killed more than a thousand militants and lost 86 soldiers since the start of the operation.

But the toll and identity of those killed is difficult to verify because journalists do not have regular access to the conflict zones.

Critics charge that many of the dead were non-combatants.

In July, an air strike in North Waziristan district that the military said killed 35 militants in fact claimed the lives of 37 civilians, according to multiple accounts by residents.
