Optimizing Grid Integration for California's Energy Future

Los Angeles CA (SPX) May 06, 2024

On May 1, 2024, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) hosted the third workshop of the High DER Future Grid Study, which assembled stakeholders and experts virtually to develop solutions for enhancing grid operations with a high volume of distributed energy resources (DERs). The workshop aimed to align California's grid modernization initiatives with its climate and equity goals.

Workshop Insights and Objectives
Facilitated by Gridworks, this session of the CPUC's Amended Scoping Memo in Rulemaking R.21-06-017 explored operational needs essential for an efficient high DER grid. Topics of discussion included enabling DERs to contribute grid services, minimizing market power, reducing costs for ratepayers, and enhancing grid resiliency.

Gap Assessment and Recommendations
The participants assessed gaps in current grid capabilities versus future needs anticipated with full grid modernization implementation. This draft assessment drew from earlier workshops and feedback from Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) on Grid Modernization Progress Reports. Focus areas discussed were:

+ Flexible Generation Interconnection: Proposals for flexible interconnections through anticipated upgrades.

+ Dynamic Rate Support: Proposals for enhancing IOU systems to support dynamic rate structures, currently a focus in CPUC's policy development.

+ DER Visibility: Improving the visibility of DERs to Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).

Data Sharing and Grid Services Development
The importance of data sharing in a high DER future was a focal point, with discussions on developing distribution-level grid services from flexible load energization to meet increasing electricity demands, especially from the transportation sector.

Next Steps
The insights from this workshop will contribute to the final Future Grid Study report, expected in Summer 2024. These developments are set to influence policy and operational strategies to fortify California's grid infrastructure for a resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy future.

NREL's laser technology simplifies solar module recycling
Los Angeles CA (SPX) May 03, 2024
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed a new method using femtosecond lasers to create glass-to-glass welds in solar modules, significantly simplifying the recycling process. This innovation replaces the traditional use of plastic polymer sheets, which complicates recycling efforts. By eliminating polymers and employing laser welds, the solar panels can be shattered at the end of their lifespan, allowing for easy recycling of glass ... read more
