Online rights group calls for Google Buzz inquiry

Google donates two million dollars to Wikipedia
San Francisco (AFP) Feb 17, 2010 - Wikipedia, the most popular pool of online collective wisdom, on Wednesday received a two-million-dollar cash infusion from leading Internet search engine Google. The non-profit Wikimedia Foundation that operates Wikipedia announced that it received the donation in its first grant from the Google Charitable Giving Fund of Tides Foundation. "Wikipedia is one of the greatest triumphs of the Internet," Google co-founder Sergey Brin said in a release. "This vast repository of community-generated content is an invaluable resource to anyone who is online." Wikipedia is a communally created and edited online encyclopedia that has become a cherished spot for seekers of up-to-date information on nearly any subject imaginable. The donation will be used to make Wikipedia easier to use and more accessible, according to Wikimedia. "This is a wonderful gift, and we celebrate it as recognition of the long-term alignment and friendship between Google and Wikimedia," said Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. "Both organizations are committed to bringing high quality information to hundreds of millions of individuals every day, and to making the Internet better for everyone." Google and Wikimedia have a history of working together, most recently on translating Wikipedia entries into more languages. Wikimedia Foundation relies on donations and volunteer efforts. More than 240,000 people donated a combined total of approximately eight million dollars in a Wikimedia fund-raising drive that ended in January. "With this generous grant, we will be able to fund additional operations and development work to increase access and contributions to our free knowledge projects globally," said Wikimedia executive director Sue Gardner.

Online rights advocates on Wednesday called on US regulators to investigate whether Google broke privacy laws when it launched its Buzz social networking feature for Gmail last week.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) argued that the Internet giant "violated user expectations, diminished user privacy, contradicted Google's privacy policy, and may have violated federal wiretap laws."

EPIC wants the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to open an investigation into Google Buzz, which launched with a feature that automatically set up public social networks built from Gmail contacts people messaged often.

Facing a slew of privacy complaints, Google swiftly changed the new Buzz feature at its free Internet email service.

Gmail users now have to create Google Buzz public profiles and get notified that "lists of people you follow and the people following you will be displayed on your public profile."

Google is also giving users the ability to block anyone following their account.

Google Buzz allows Gmail users to get updates about what friends are doing online and offers ways to share video, photos and other digitized snippets in a challenge to social networking stars Facebook and Twitter.

Google has gone on record saying it didn't test Buzz enough before releasing it and that the service will evolve with feedback from users.

The EPIC complaint calls on the FTC to compel Google to make Buzz "opt-in" only and stop mining Gmail contact lists for social networking candidates.

"This is a significant breach of consumers expectations of privacy," said EPIC executive director Marc Rotenberg.

"Google should not be allowed to push users' personal information into a social network they never requested."

Microsoft weaving social networks into Office 2010
San Francisco (AFP) Feb 17, 2010 - Microsoft is weaving popular social networking services into its latest generation Outlook email program, to be released with an Office 2010 set of applications later this year.

Software that channels LinkedIn updates to Outlook inboxes was available online Wednesday at linkedin.com/outlook for people dabbling with a test version of the popular email program.

Microsoft is working with Facebook and MySpace to do the same with content from those online communities, according to Outlook Office group product manager Dev Balasubramanian.

"It really is about bringing friends, family, and colleagues into you inbox," Balasubramanian said in a video posted at the US software giant's website.

"As you communicate with them you can see their social activities; you can see all of the folks in your social network and it updates as you are reading your email."

The LinkedIn connection to Outlook lets people using the email program stay in tune with any changes in job status, contact information, or affiliations being shared by friends at the career-focused online community.

"LinkedIn is all about your professional network," said Elliot Shmukler, product management director at LinkedIn, which reports having 60 million members.

"Meanwhile, Outlook powers the professional inbox so the match is very clear."

The test version of Outlook is available online at office.com/beta.

Microsoft's announcement came shortly after rival Google ran into trouble with a new Buzz social networking tool added to its free email service Gmail.

Google Buzz was launched with a feature that automatically created public social networks based on the Gmail contacts people most frequently sent messages to.

A number of commentators noted that they did not necessarily want their email contacts made public like Facebook friends.

On Friday the service was modified so that Gmail users have to create a Google Buzz public profile and will be notified that "lists of people you follow and the people following you will be displayed on your public profile."

Google Buzz allows Gmail users to get updates about what friends are doing online and offers ways to share video, photos and other digitized snippets.

Google Buzz has been described by some technology analysts as a direct challenge by Google to social networking stars Facebook and Twitter.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center on Wednesday filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission calling for an investigation into whether the original Buzz wrongly disclosed too much information about people.
