Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), a leader in medium-caliber weapons systems, has introduced the M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun. This new version features two ammunition feed paths, a first for the 30x113mm caliber, allowing users to switch between different types of ammunition on demand.

The dual-feed system eliminates the need for mixed ammunition belts, simplifying logistics and enhancing operational flexibility. A typical recommended ammunition load for the M230LF includes XM1211 proximity-fuzed rounds for countering uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and XM1198 high explosive, dual-purpose rounds for anti-armor engagements.

The M230LF has reached Technology Readiness Level 6, making it eligible for live fire demonstrations, which are planned for early 2025.

Dave Fine, vice president of armament systems at Northrop Grumman, said, "The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun offers new flexibility by switching between ammunition paths using dual-feed technology. Using advanced technology combined with five decades of battle-proven experience, this next-generation cannon will empower operators to quickly respond to threats. This chain gun is the latest in our Bushmaster line to deliver reliable, multi-mission capabilities addressing the evolving threat environment."

The M230LF stands as the world's first medium-caliber chain gun with dual-feed capability, providing the ability to switch between ammunition types instantly. This allows operators to efficiently address a range of targets in the field.

The dual-feed system also offers increased mission flexibility, allowing operators to switch between ammunition types with the flip of a switch, reducing the need for reloading and enhancing operational efficiency. For users of the current single-feed M230LF, the new dual-feed variant shares 60% parts commonality, ensuring easier maintenance and faster repairs. Single-feed versions of the M230LF will remain available for customers preferring that option.
