Munitions blast kills two children in Darfur: UN
by Staff Writers
Khartoum (AFP) Sept 6, 2011

Two children were killed and three others seriously wounded in Sudan's war-ravaged Darfur region when unexploded munitions they were playing with blew up, peacekeepers said on Tuesday.

"Two children were killed and three others sustained serious injuries in Al-Tawisha, approximately 190 kilometres (120 miles) southeast of El-Fasher, North Darfur, while playing with unexploded ordnance (UXO) on 31 August," the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said in a statement.

One of the injured children, who were all taken to El-Fasher hospital for treatment, lost a hand and an eye in the blast.

A 14-year-old girl was the victim of a similar explosion in August, in Abu Abajura in South Darfur, receiving wounds to the neck and face, and having to have her right hand amputated, the peacekeeping force added.

Decades of conflict have littered Sudan with bombs and other leftover munitions, particularly in Darfur, where powerful militias have been fighting the Sudanese army for eight years.

The UN says at least 300,000 people have died in Darfur since the uprising against the Khartoum government first erupted in 2003.
