Millennium Cell Develops Fuel Cartridge Manufacturing Capability

Millennium Cell has announced that that it has established manufacturing capability for Hydrogen on Demand fuel cartridges, a step which will broaden the company's business model to include commercial sales of standard products. With this development, the company also has the capability to fulfill orders from licensees who package components into customized fuel cartridge designs.

The company collaborated with The Dow Chemical Company and The Edison Welding Institute to develop manufacturing techniques and select materials for key fuel cartridge components. As a result, the company has constructed a pilot production line to produce fuel cartridges for commercial applications. Within the program, the key components were redesigned with new materials to achieve high reliability and performance at a low cost under military specification environmental conditions.

Over the past few months, Millennium Cell shipped components for 25 fuel cartridges to Jadoo Power to support their contract deliverables with the U.S. Department of Defense. The company plans to ship next month over 25 additional units to the NextEnergy Center for independent testing as the final stage of manufacturing process validation.

"I would like to thank Dow, EWI and NextEnergy for their valuable contributions to this achievement that will accelerate the commercialization of Millennium Cell fuel cartridges," commented Adam P. Briggs, Millennium Cell's President. "This pilot line will enable the shipment of fuel cartridges to the State of South Carolina in mid-2007 and to other Jadoo customers later this year."

The cartridges will provide the hydrogen fuel for Jadoo's XRT Extended Runtime Accessories targeted for use with emergency responders, Homeland Security and other "off-grid" power support applications in Columbia, South Carolina. With over 2200 W-hrs of energy, the XRT is ideal for off-grid, critical applications such as portable radio and laptop battery recharging, powering mobile law enforcement surveillance installations as well as providing back-up power for critical communication devices like satellite phones and modems.

New Fuel Cell Design Adds Better Control While Reducing Complexity

When Princeton University engineers want to increase the power output of their new fuel cell, they just give it a little more gas - hydrogen gas, to be exact. This simple control mechanism, which varies the flow of hydrogen fuel to control the power generated, was previously thought impossible and is a potentially major development in fuel cell technology.
