Large Fleet Best Practices Help Small Fleets

Significant savings can be realized by enforcing vehicle use policies.

Wright Express encourages small businesses to adopt the best practices of America's largest fleets to save on the cost of fueling vehicles. Dedicated fuel purchasing programs and emerging technology save on the total cost of fueling--which can quickly translate to bottom line savings with today's fuel prices.

To save on fueling, costs fleets typically use a customized charge card program that is used only for vehicle related purchases. Wright Express' dedicated card program is convenient and easy to deploy and helps fleets enforce fueling policies, sets limits at the pump, monitors employee purchases, tracks the best gas prices in an area and puts business owners in control of employee fuel buying.

Significant savings can be realized by enforcing vehicle use policies, using a fuel buying program that sets and tracks limits, tracking unauthorized use and using telematics technology.

Employing these simple techniques can quickly get employees to understand that the fuel in the work car or truck isn't theirs to waste.

"As the cost of fuel goes up everyday it highlights the risks inherent in giving employees free rein to buy and use fuel. A clearly managed vehicle use policy backed up with a reporting and control program often leads to dramatic savings," said Mike Dubyak, Chairman, CEO, and President of Wright Express.

Another example that smaller companies are learning from large fleets is the use of GPS/telematics technology.

Fleets of heavy trucks were early adaptors of telematics to track drivers, measure and report on idle time, monitor engine performance, and optimize route planning. Smaller businesses are now able to take advantage of the same technology adapted to their types of vehicles and business operations. Wright Express offers a GPS/Telematics solution that can be accessed through Wright Express' online applications.

"Over the past 25 years, Wright Express has partnered with fleets to build programs that center on security, control, and ease of use around vehicle fueling and maintenance," continued Dubyak.

"Cost savings have always been an important part of that equation - but I feel strongly that now, more than ever, businesses with vehicles need to do everything they can to save on the total cost of fueling and eliminate unauthorized use. Today saving 10-25% of total fuel costs can have a big impact to a business's bottom line, and deploying our program enables a small business to recognize these levels of savings."
