Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) has launched Iridium Certus GMDSS, an advanced maritime safety and communication solution. Building on the robust Iridium Certus technology, this new offering integrates distress alert, safety voice, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI) with additional services like Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and Ship Security Alert System (SSAS). Iridium Certus GMDSS sets a new benchmark in cost, efficiency, and performance for maritime safety and security, becoming an essential part of any ship's communication network.

The integration of GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS into Iridium Certus terminals offers the maritime sector a single, versatile communication solution for fleets. Leading equipment manufacturers such as Cobham Satcom, Intellian, Lars Thrane, and Thales will soon release Iridium Certus 700 and 200 GMDSS solutions.

Iridium Certus GMDSS delivers comprehensive global safety services, including coverage in polar regions, with compact, lightweight equipment that requires minimal maintenance. The system is easy to install and provides a cost-effective, reliable solution that meets maritime safety and regulatory standards.

Whether used alone or alongside a ship's Ka/Ku-band broadband system, the Iridium Certus GMDSS system provides essential services mandated for all SOLAS-class ships by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system ensures ships can send distress alerts, receive vital safety information, and receive assistance during emergencies. With the press of the distress button, crew members can connect with a rescue coordination center (RCC) in seconds, allowing rapid response and communication during emergencies.
