Iraq to hold postponed provincial poll in June
by Staff Writers
Baghdad (AFP) May 20, 2013

The Iraqi cabinet on Monday said elections will be held on June 20 in Anbar and Nineveh -- two of the six provinces which did not vote during last month's provincial polls.

It said it has approved a proposal from the country's electoral commission to hold elections in these two provinces.

The authorities did not hold elections in Anbar and Nineveh last month saying security could not be ensured there.

The three provinces that make up the autonomous Kurdistan region and Kirkuk are also to vote. All other provinces voted on April 20.

Polls in Kurdistan are to be held later this year, while provincial council elections have not been held in Kirkuk since 2005 because of a lack of agreement between its various ethnic groups.
