Indian partners have expressed interest in Russia's Glonass satellite navigation systems, a spokesperson for Glonass Union said Thursday.

"At the moment, India is actively developing the market of telematics services... Governmental organizations, including police service, express interest in navigation technologies," the spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

According to Glonass Union president, Alexander Gurko, Russian satellite navigation technologies will be widely used in India in toll paying systems, rapid response emergency systems and asset management.

India is actively developing new industries, such as space exploration and information technologies. It is currently developing a project for the construction of an autonomous satellite navigation system, known as Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

The Glonass project, launched in 1993, is considered to be Russia's version of the GPS (Global Positioning System) network.

The Glonass network currently consists of 28 satellites, of which 24 are operational, allowing real-time positioning and vector data for surface, sea and airborne objects around the globe.

US Senator says GPS often fails to track emergency calls
Washington DC (Sputnik) Feb 01, 2015
First responders are often not able to pinpoint the location of victims when emergency calls are made from wireless devices due to defects in the US GPS satellite system, US Senator Chuck Schumer, said in a press release.
