I.Coast borders to reopen Monday: army

by Staff Writers
Abidjan (AFP) Dec 5, 2010
Troubled Ivory Coast's international borders will reopen from Monday, four days after they were closed following post-election unrest, the armed forces announced on state television.

The borders would be reopened at 6:00 am (0600 GMT), but security would nevertheless be reinforced, said the statement from the army's general staff.

Since the end of the rebellion in the north of the country however, Ivory Coast's army only covers the southern part of the country.

South Africa's former president Thabo Mbeki was in Ivory Coast Sunday for the African Union to try to broker a solution to the stand-off between presidential rivals Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara.

Both men claim to have won the November 28 election.

But with the army backing Gbagbo and much of the international community recognising Ouattara, there was little sign that either side was backing down, raising fears that the country might descend into civil war.
