Hungary's toxic sludge disaster claims tenth victim

Budapest (AFP) Nov 5, 2010
The death toll from a toxic sludge spill in Hungary a month ago on Friday rose to ten after an elderly victim who suffered chemical burns to two-thirds of his body died in hospital, a doctor said.

"Our patient, who was transferred here after the sludge disaster on October 4, passed away shortly after eleven o'clock Friday morning," said Peter Jakabos, head of dermatology at the Aladar Petz county hospital.

Some 150 people were injured in the accident in western Hungary after an alumina plant's reservoir burst, spilling toxic sludge across an area of 40 square kilometres (15.4 square miles), polluting the Danube River and its tributaries.
