Framatome was awarded a contract to modernize the reactor protection system (RPS) of the Gosgen Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)* operated by the Swiss utility Kernkraftwerk Gosgen-Daniken AG. The RPS powers down reactors safely in case of any deviations.

"This contract marks another important milestone in the long-lasting cooperation between Gosgen NPP and Framatome," said Frederic Lelievre, Framatome's senior executive vice president in charge of Sales, Regional Platforms and the Instrumentation and Control Business Unit.

"It is yet another example showing how, over the years, we have managed the transformation from analog to digital technology successfully together."

The scope of the contract includes modernization of the entire RPS using Framatome's proven digital instrumentation and control (I and C) platform, TELEPERM XS. In addition, important functions will be realized with a diverse hardwired back-up system.

Installation and commissioning of the new RPS are scheduled for the plant's 2022 outage. The modernization project enhances plant safety, supports long-term operation and protects investments into the future.

The signing of the contract was preceded by the successful modernization of the plant's four emergency diesel generators, including the upgrade of the entire I and C and electrical systems with Framatome's digital technology. In 2014, Framatome completed the digital modernization of the plant's reactor control and limitation.

The Gosgen pressurized water reactor was connected to the grid in 1979 and has a net electric output of 1,010 megawatts.

Japan to halt nuke plants if anti-terror steps not taken
Tokyo (AFP) April 24, 2019
Japanese authorities on Wednesday threatened to close down nuclear reactors that do not conform to strict anti-terror measures introduced after the 2011 Fukushima tsunami and nuclear disaster. The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) introduced tougher new rules in 2013 requiring utilities to be able to maintain nuclear reaction cooling facilities by remote control if necessary. The regulations aim to prevent radioactive leaks if nuclear plants came under attack - for example from terrorists pilo ... read more
