Framatome to modernize digital controls at Columbia Generating Station

Richland WA (SPX) Dec 05, 2025

Framatome has secured a contract to replace several digital control systems at Energy Northwests Columbia Generating Station in Washington state. The project covers system design, engineering, manufacturing, testing and on-site installation for new digital feedwater level control and feedwater heater vents and drains systems, which are central to thermal performance and plant efficiency.

This work forms part of Energy Northwests program to maintain a stable supply of low carbon electricity for customers in the Pacific Northwest. Tony Robinson, President and CEO of Framatome in North America, said, This project reflects a growing partnership with Energy Northwest and our shared commitment to advancing safe, reliable nuclear energy for the Pacific Northwest region. By integrating Framatomes advanced digital controls, the Columbia Generating Station will be modernizing essential systems that help ensure long-term plant performance and deliver the clean, dependable power that communities across the Northwest rely on every day.

The upgraded equipment will use the commercial digital control Tricon platform, which is integrated into the plants instrumentation and control system. This system functions as the facilities central nervous system, giving operators key information on plant behavior, supporting operation of safety systems during routine conditions and automatically protecting the reactor when required.

By moving to this digital platform, the plant expects improved operator insight and situational awareness, along with lower lifecycle maintenance costs that support long-term operation. The modernization is intended to keep critical systems aligned with current standards for nuclear plant control technologies.

Framatome will carry out system development, manufacturing and assembly at its Centers for Operational Excellence in Mansfield, Massachusetts, and Lynchburg, Virginia. Columbia Generating Station, located about 10 miles north of Richland, Washington, is the only commercial nuclear power plant in the Pacific Northwest and plays a significant role in the regions electricity mix.

Niger says putting its uranium on international market
Niamey, Niger (AFP) Nov 30, 2025
Niger's military regime on Sunday announced it was putting uranium produced by Somair - a subsidiary of French giant Orana before the regime nationalised it in June - on the international market. Uranium mining in Niger is at the centre of a standoff between the junta that took power in 2023 and Orano, which is 90-percent owned by the French government and has operated mines in Niger for decades. The news was announced on state television Tele Sahel in a report Sunday evening citing comments b ... read more
