Five dead, 14 missing in Indonesia landslide: official
Jakarta (AFP) Nov 14, 2008 Five people have been killed and 14 are feared dead after a landslide triggered by heavy rain crushed scores of houses in Indonesia, an official said Friday. The landslide destroyed 54 houses Thursday in the Cianjur district of West Java, local disaster response spokesman Wawan Setiawan told AFP. "We've found five people dead and 14 people missing," he said. "About 700 residents have been evacuated to safer areas. Now they live in tents." Bad weather had halted the search for survivors, he said. Local disaster response official Yadi Supriyadi said: "We fear that the missing are dead already." "The destroyed houses were mostly frail wooden houses, the traditional houses of the area," he said. Residents had used hoes and crowbars to try to dig their neighbours and loved ones out of the rubble, he said. More sophisticated rescue equipment could not reach the villages due to blocked roads, ElShinta radio reported.
