The number of fatalities attributed to an explosion on an oil production facility off the coast of Brazil was raised by one, contractor BW Offshore said.

The contractor last week reported an explosion on the floating production storage and offloading vessel Cidade de Sao Mateus. Brazilian producer Petrobras deployed the vessel at the oil-rich Santos Basin off the country's coast in mid-November.

An initial five fatalities -- four Brazilian and one Indian -- were reported with four crew members, all Brazilian, missing.

"BW Offshore now confirms that one of the four missing Brazilians is found deceased, bringing the total number of fatalities up to six persons," the company said. "Three Brazilian crew are still missing."

Two workers were listed as in critical condition as a result of injuries sustained during the incident. A total of five are receiving medical attention at a Brazilian hospital. There were 74 people on the vessel at the time of the incident.

BW Offshore said production in the Santos Basin was halted and the unit was shut down as a result of the explosion.

Cidade de Sao Mateus is capable of producing up to 150,000 barrels of oil per day and has a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil.

There was no comment on potential environmental damage resulting from the explosion on board the FPSO.
