Eight trapped in flooded China mine: state media

by Staff Writers
Beijing (AFP) April 25, 2011
A coal mine flooded in southwest China on Sunday evening, trapping eight workers, state media said.

Forty-five miners were working underground when the facility in Panxian county, Guizhou province, flooded, the state Xinhua news agency said, quoting an official at the scene.

Most scrambled to safety, leaving eight miners trapped, Xinhua said, adding rescuers were frantically trying to pump water out.

A total of 2,433 people died in coal mine accidents in China in 2010, officials say, but labour rights groups have long maintained the actual death toll is likely much higher.

China's mines are among the deadliest in the world due to lax regulation, corruption and inefficiency.
