Death toll in Beijing fire rises to 18: state media

by Staff Writers
Beijing (AFP) April 28, 2011
The death toll from a fire that swept through an illegally constructed Beijing building this week rose to 18 when one of the two dozen people injured died, state media reported Thursday.

A girl died Wednesday in hospital after being treated for burns and smoke inhalation, Xinhua news agency said, without providing further details on the victim.

The report said at least seven other patients remain in critical condition following Monday's fire, which was triggered by a malfunctioning electric tricycle.

The building in Beijing's southern Daxing district was illegally built by a local resident and the victims were all migrant workers, Xinhua said earlier.

Twenty-four people were injured.

Deadly fires are common in China and are typically blamed on lax observation and enforcement of fire-safety measures.
