China's top diplomat to visit Vietnam: foreign ministry

Beijing (AFP) Nov 30, 2023

Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi will visit Vietnam on Friday for bilateral talks, Beijing's foreign ministry said.

On the invitation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang, Wang will go to Vietnam from December 1 to 2, Beijing said.

He will chair the 15th meeting of the China-Vietnam Bilateral Cooperation Steering Committee, it added, a forum that has traditionally seen the two countries discuss trade and economic cooperation.

Vietnam, which fought a war with China between 1979 and 1988, is wary of its giant northern neighbour, and is one of a handful of countries with claims on the many islets and outcrops that dot the South China Sea.

Beijing claims almost the entire sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade passes annually, and has ignored an international court ruling that its assertion has no legal basis.

But Beijing has shown signs that it is now seeking ... read more
