China warns its businesses in Libya

by Staff Writers
Beijing (AFP) Feb 21, 2011
Beijing on Monday urged business travellers to defer plans to visit Libya and told Chinese companies there to take precautions as a popular uprising reached the streets of the capital Tripoli.

"Those with investment projects or business in Libya should pay close attention to the development of the situation," the commerce ministry said in statement on its website.

The statement urged Chinese workers in Libya to stay away from protests.

Earlier Monday, some 500 Libyans stormed and looted a South Korean construction site west of Tripoli, injuring South Korean and Bangladeshi workers, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

British energy giant BP was also on Monday making preparations to evacuate some of its staff from Libya amid escalating unrest in the country, a company spokesman told AFP.
