Burkina Faso ruling party says opposition aiming for coup

Ouagadougou (AFP) May 3, 2011
Burkina Faso's ruling party on Tuesday accused the opposition of trying to stage a coup by calling for President Blaise Compaore's ouster in a series of popular protests.

The head of the Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP), Roch Marc Christian Kabore, said the situation has revealed "putschist tendencies" which he thought were a thing of the past.

Kabore, who is also the president of the national assembly, called on all "true democrats and patriots... to thwart these concepts which lead to democratic regression.

The CDP has 74 of 111 lawmakers in the national assembly.

On Saturday, 34 opposition parties called for the departure of Compaore who has been in power since 1987. His regime has been facing an unprecedented wave of protests since February which has seen mutinies by both police and soldiers.

Togolese President Faure Gnassinbe on Tuesday called for a return to calm in the neighbouring country, during a brief visit to Ouagadougou.

"In a country, there are always problems, but they must be solved through dialogue. When we take other paths, we lose a lot of time and cause a lot of damage," he said.
