Bulgaria to resume electricity exports early Tuesday
by Staff Writers
Sofia (AFP) Feb 20, 2012

Bulgaria will resume early Tuesday electricity exports to its Balkan neighbours after an 11-day cut prompted by soaring local consumption due to a cold snap, the government said.

"Electricity exports will resume at 1:00 am Tuesday (2300 GMT Monday) in line with an order of Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov," the minister's office said in a statement on Monday.

Bulgaria is a key electricity exporter in the Balkans, sending to neighbouring Greece, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey 10.5 billion kilowatt hours last year or on average 1,000 megawatts of electricity per hour.

But a recent cold snap, coal supply problems to four power plants, one of which had technical problems, forced authorities to halt exports. Coal supplies and production were now back to normal, while temperatures have risen.
