Boeing nets $51.5M for engineering support on Navy's C-40As

Boeing was awarded a $51.5 million contract for engineering services to support up to 17 C-40A Clipper aircraft for the U.S. Navy.

The contract includes sustaining engineering, engineering data, technical publications, access to and distribution of technical data and publications, and other technical support services, the Department of Defense said Friday.

The C-40A is a reconfigured 737-700 optimized to transport passengers, cargo or both in "fleet logistics support" for the U.S. Naval Reserve. The aircraft can carry carry 121 passengers, 36,000 pounds of main deck cargo, or a combination of 70 passengers and 15,000 pounds of cargo, according to Boeing.

Work on the new contract will be performed at Boeing's plant in Renton, Wash., and is expected to be completed by May 2024. No funds were obligated at time of award, and will be obligated on individual orders as they are issued.

The C-40A was delivered to the Navy in 2001 as a replacement for the C-9B Skytrain aircraft.

The U.S. Naval Reserve operates and maintains about a dozen C-40A at air bases in Oceana, Va.;

North Island, Calif.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Ft. Worth, Texas; and Whidbey Island, Wash.

The Air Force also uses C-40B/C variants, which are officially unnamed. The branch describes the aircraft as an "office in the sky" for senior military and government leaders.

L3 awarded $9.2M to support Navy's 57mm HE-4G ammunition
Washington UPI) May 28, 2019 - L3 Mustang Technology was awarded a $9.2 million contract for long-lead material to support 57mm MK 332 High Explosive-4 Bolt Guided Cartridge ammunition for the U.S. Navy's ships.

Work will be performed at the company's plant in Plano, Texas, and is expected to be completed by October, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Friday. Mustang Technology Group is owned by L3 and is part of its Precision Engagement Systems section.

The HE-4G is a 57mm electrically-primed bolt cartridge designed to function in the 57mm MK 110 GM, and is intended for combating surface and air targets on the Navy's littoral combat ships and new fast frigate, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard's National Security and Offshore Patrol cutters.

The fixed cartridge consists of a radio frequency guided projectile, brass cartridge case and energetics qualified for Navy use. The projectile is composed of a guidance section, an advanced divert module with a fuse safe and arm, and a warhead.

L3 Mustang's Advanced Low Cost Munitions Ordnance, or ALaMO, program has been successfully testing the ammunition at the U.S. Navy's Potomac River Test Range in Dahlgren, Via. In tests, it hit a moving surface target at significantly longer ranges than possible with unguided projectiles.

"This improved accuracy allows for a significant reduction in cost and adds depth to the ship's magazine by requiring fewer rounds per target," according to a company news release.

Naval and Marine Corps fiscal 2019 procurement of ammunition funding in the full amount will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

Aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan deploys to Indo-Pacific region

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its commander task force units began underway operations in the Indo-Pacific region, the Navy announced on Wednesday.
