Boulder Housing Partners (BHP), the housing authority serving the city of Boulder, has partnered with VisionSun Design, a design and project management consulting firm, to award a contract to solar energy company Bella Energy to install thirty 1.75 kilowatt solar electric systems on a 30-unit affordable housing site.

The 52.5 kilowatt solar electric system will be installed at Diagonal Court Townhouses in North Boulder which consist of five separate buildings with six units each, for a total of 30 units. Each unit is individually metered by the local utility, Xcel Energy.

It's the result of a pioneer-funding model for renewable energy on affordable housing. Funding for the project was received from the City of Boulder's Housing Fund, the Colorado Governor Energy Office, and a pilot program for multi-unit solar electric systems from Xcel Energy Solar Rewards Program. The project will be completed by the end of February 2008.

This groundbreaking system will save over $7,800 per a year on its electricity bills at current rates. Boulder Housing Partners is a non-profit that provides housing assistance to more than 1,600 families in the city of Boulder. Every dollar saved is recycled into more and better housing for BHP residents.

"I have been very impressed by the creative, effective partnership that came together to create these energy savings at Diagonal Court," said Tim Beal, BHP Director of Housing. "It is a model for the future of energy conservation and affordable housing. Much credit goes to Bella Energy and VisionSun Design for their commitment."

VisionSun Design designed the entire project including project feasibility and system requirements, and then managed the vendor selection and installation project management process. "Energy costs over the next 25 years are the biggest unknown for housing authorities. Solar energy can greatly reduce or eliminate those costs," said Paul Melamed, owner of VisionSun Design.
