BAE Systems contracted to support U.S. submarine weapon systems
by Ryan Maass
Washington (UPI) Dec 14, 2016

BAE Systems has received a $368 million contract to perform weapon system engineering services for U.S. and U.K. Ohio- and Vanguard-class submarines.

The five-year contract supports the U.S. Navy's Strategic Systems Programs office, which oversees the Strategic Weapons System and Attack Weapons systems for both developing platforms. Company officials say the work will bolster maritime defensive capabilities for the two allies.

"We provide expertise to the Navy to maintain, optimize, and deploy seaborne weapons systems that serve as a strategic deterrent against major threats to the security of our nation and its allies," BAE Systems Intelligence & Security president DeEtte Gray said in a press release.

Tasks for the company will include weapon system integration, engineering, and testing. BAE Systems will also provide IT support, assist with training programs, and develop fleet documentation materials.

The agreement supports existing Ohio-class submarines as well as future Columbia-class vessels, formerly known as Ohio replacement submarines. Construction on the next-generation submarines is expected to begin in 2021, with the first vessel entering service in 2031.
