BAE Systems Wins Unique Approval For Unmanned Air Systems

Dubai, UAE (SPX) Nov 14, 2007
BAE Systems has become the first UK-based aerospace business to gain design approval under the UK MOD Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS) for Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems without a weight limit. The certification recognises BAE Systems capabilities for the design, development, certification and test of Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) including systems and sub systems.

Chris Clarkson, Director for Autonomous Systems and Future Capability, said: "It is MoD policy that defence contracts shall be placed only with contractors whose management, technical resources and quality assurance arrangements are demonstrably adequate to provide products and services of the required quality, economically and on time. This is a significant step forward for us and a tribute to the work and commitment of the teams behind our UAS programmes.

He added: "The standards we have had to meet are stringent and wide-ranging. We are the first UK company to achieve this approval for UAS without weight limit."

Unmanned Air System Project For South Coast Formally Launched
London, UK (SPX) Nov 12, 2007
Unmanned aircraft could be used for police and coastal patrol work on Britain's south east coast from as soon as 2012, following the launch of new project that sees BAE Systems partnering with a range of government bodies. Although some trials of remote-controlled air vehicles have been carried out by police forces in Britain, this will be the first time that autonomous aircraft will be used by civil bodies in the UK.
