UN denies naming 'point of contact' for aliens
Vienna (AFP) Sept 28, 2010
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs on Tuesday dismissed as "nonsense" a newspaper report which said it had appointed a new ambassador as a point of contact for extra-terrestrials. "The article in the Sunday Times is nonsense," UNOOSA said in a statement, referring to a report this weekend which said the UN was to appoint Malaysian astrophysicist, Mazlan Othman, to be the first contact for any aliens. Othman heads UNOOSA, a little-known department of the UN based in Vienna with a ... read more

United Nations, N.Y. (UPI) Sep 27, 2010
The United Nations is set to appoint the world's first ambassador to greet any aliens trying to contact Earth, authorities said. China Ready For Another Lunar Encounter
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 27, 2010
China could launch its second lunar probe within days. The Chang'e 2 spacecraft was originally built as a back-up to China's first lunar orbiter, Chang'e 1, which was launched successfully in 2007. Rather than mothballing the spare spacecraft, China has sensibly planned a follow-up mission that will examine the Moon even more closely than the first. Chang'e 2 has been fairly camera-shy for ... more

'Helper' robots seen within 10 years
Ithaca, N.Y. (UPI) Sep 23, 2010
Robots capable of helping people with everyday tasks could be available and affordable within 10 years, a U.S. researcher predicts. Ashutosh Saxena, Cornell University assistant professor of computer science, is working to bring robots into homes and offices that can clean up a messy room, assemble a flat-pack bookcase or unload a dishwasher, all without human intervention, a university release said Thursday. "Just like people buy a car, I envision that in five to 10 years, people will b ... read more
