China Ready For Another Lunar Encounter
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 27, 2010
China could launch its second lunar probe within days. The Chang'e 2 spacecraft was originally built as a back-up to China's first lunar orbiter, Chang'e 1, which was launched successfully in 2007. Rather than mothballing the spare spacecraft, China has sensibly planned a follow-up mission that will examine the Moon even more closely than the first. Chang'e 2 has been fairly camera-shy for the media, and we have received only a basic disclosure of its mission. We can expect that it will look prett ... read more

Sorting The Space Trash
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
We all sort our rubbish by category, allowing recycling to take place. It's easy to understand why. Different items require different processes for disposal. For years, we have been growing increasingly aware of the trash problem in low Earth orbit. Debris from whole satellites to tiny flecks of paint poses a hazard to anything we launch. It can damage spacecraft or even claim lives. With ... more

Glitch delays space station crew's return to Earth
Moscow (AFP) Sept 24, 2010
The Soyuz capsule failed Friday to undock for the first time in a decade of flights to the International Space Station, forcing three crew members to remain an extra day in orbit. The Russian mission control centre near Moscow said the shuttle's return to Earth was rolled back to Saturday over fears that the capsule was not fully airlocked after a computer malfunction. "The landing of th ... more

Synthetic Life Could Aid Space Exploration
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
When packing for a manned mission to Mars or the Moon, the best thing to bring may not be food or fuel, but specially designed organisms that can create those things for you. Scientists are researching the possibility of engineering synthetic organisms that could use the resources available in the solar system to create the supplies astronauts would need to survive on another planet. "Personally I'm interested in space settlement," said John Cumbers, a graduate student at NASA's Ames Researc ... read more
