U.K. predicts 'spaceplane' in 10 years
London (UPI) Sep 17, 2010
British engineers say they believe spacecraft taking off from an ordinary airport runway and carrying tourists into space might be a reality in 10 years. A British company, Reaction Engines Ltd., is developing a spaceplane it says will travel five times the speed of sound and carry up to 24 passengers and up to 12 tons of cargo into space, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday. The unpiloted craft would take off from an airport runway and use its two hydrogen/oxygen engines to propel it mo ... read more

Uranus may have been cosmic 'pinball'
Paris (UPI) Sep 17, 2010
Jupiter and Saturn may have played a game of cosmic "pinball" with the planet Uranus before finally tossing it into its present orbit, French researchers say. Computer simulations have shown that Jupiter and Saturn moved out of their orbits in the early history of the solar system, scattering other nearby orbiting objects, NewScientist.com reports. Alessandro Morbidelli of the Co ... more

The Longest Space Mission
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 16, 2010
NASA has now sent five spacecraft heading outwards from the solar system. We have Pioneers 10 and 11, Voyagers 1 and 2, and the New Horizons mission, headed for a 2015 rendezvous with Pluto and probably another small world beyond. The Voyagers have already given us an interesting taste of the boundary of the solar system, detecting the first evidence of the "heliopause", or the region wher ... more

NASA names 'last' space shuttle crew
Washington (UPI) Sep 15, 2010
NASA says it has chosen the three-man, one-woman crew that could be the last to fly a U.S. space shuttle mission. As things stand now, veteran astronauts Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim would fly only if the shuttle Endeavour sustains crippling damage during a planned February mission - the last presently scheduled - and its crew needed rescue. In that case, Ferguson and his crew would fly the shuttle Atlantis on a rescue mission, Florida Today reported Wednes ... read more
