STSS Demonstration Satellites Demo Capabilities For Detecting Another Satellite
Redondo Beach CA (SPX) Sep 15, 2010
A Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS) Demonstration program satellite showed an increased set of capabilities when it detected and tracked a resident space object - another satellite - on July 19. This Planet Smells Funny
Huntsville AL (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
Giant planet GJ 436b in the constellation Leo is missing something. Would you believe swamp gas? To the surprise of astronomers who have been studying the Neptune-sized planet using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, GJ 436b has very little methane (CH4). "Methane should be abundant on a planet of this temperature and size, but we found 7000 times less methane than what the models predict," s ... more

Goddard Scientists Explore Desert RATS
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
What's it like to explore the surfaces of other planets? Two scientists from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., are finding out by taking part in the annual Desert Research and Technology Studies, or Desert RATS, project, here on Earth. They will travel to the Arizona desert, a field location chosen to simulate possible sites of future planetary exploration missions. It's a cheaper, easier way for NASA to test equipment and train crews, and those who participate learn a lot abou ... read more
