Weighing The Planets, From Mercury To Saturn
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Aug 24, 2010
An international research team led by David Champion, now at Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, with researchers from Australia, Germany, the U.S., U.K. and Canada, has come up with a new way to weigh the planets in our Solar System, using radio signals from pulsars. Data from a set of four pulsars have been used to weigh Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn with their moons and rings. The new measurement technique is sensitive to just 0.003% of the mass of the Earth, and one te ... read more

Working Like A Dog In Outer Space
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Aug 20, 2010
Fifty years ago, Russia made a huge stride in its quest to send a man into orbit. On August 20, 1960, reporters crowded around two small but sprightly dogs, trying to get a good picture of the triumphant space travelers. Belka and Strelka, the first creatures to return safely to Earth after 24 hours in orbit, live on in the memories of former Soviets, unlike many of their predecessors, who ... more

NASA Sensors To Guide Spacecraft To Safe, Distant Landings
Hampton VA (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
NASA is developing technologies that will allow landing vehicles to automatically identify and navigate to the location of a safe landing site while detecting landing hazards during the final descent to the surface. This is important because future missions - whether to the Moon, an asteroid, Mars or other location - will need this capability to land safely near specific resources that are ... more

LRO Reveals Incredible Shrinking Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
Newly discovered cliffs in the lunar crust indicate the moon shrank globally in the geologically recent past and might still be shrinking today, according to a team analyzing new images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft. The results provide important clues to the moon's recent geologic and tectonic evolution. The moon formed in a chaotic environment of intense bomba ... more

Countdown To Vesta
Huntsville AL (SPX) Aug 20, 2010
Let the countdown begin. NASA's Dawn spacecraft is less than one year away from giant asteroid Vesta. There's nothing more exciting than revealing an unexplored, alien world," says Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Vesta," he predicts, "is going to amaze us." Dawn is slated to enter orbit around Vesta in late July 2011. As the first breathtaking images are beamed back to Earth, researchers will quickly combine them into a movie, allowing us all to ride along. ... read more
