![]() Washington (AFP) Aug 11, 2010 Astronauts aboard the International Space Station were preparing Wednesday to conduct a second spacewalk to repair a failed cooling system on the orbiter, NASA said. Once outside the station, spacewalkers Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson will work towards unhooking and removing the busted module that has caused the cooling problem before they can attach a replacement. "If all goes as planned, the spare pump will be installed during the third spacewalk," said the US space agency, adding th ... read more |

Opportunity Performs Science And Rolls To Endeavour Crater![]() Opportunity took advantage of some exposed rock outcrop to perform an in-situ (contact) science campaign to sample the surface at roughly one-kilometer (0.62-mile) intervals. On Sol 2315 (July 29, 2010), the rover performed a short 16-meter (52-foot) drive to position herself on exposed outcrop for a weekend science campaign. On Sol 2317 (July 31, 2010), the robotic arm (instrument d ... more Robot Climbs Walls ![]() Wielding two claws, a motor and a tail that swings like a grandfather clock's pendulum, a small robot named ROCR ("rocker") scrambles up a carpeted, 8-foot wall in just over 15 seconds - the first such robot designed to climb efficiently and move like human rock climbers or apes swinging through trees. "While this robot eventually can be used for inspection, maintenance and surveillance, p ... more Wyle Helps Prepare Robonaut 2 For Launch To ISS ![]() While Wyle has assisted hundreds of astronauts, cosmonauts and civilians who have gone into space since the 1960s, the company has now completed its preparations for NASA's first "human-like" robot for launch aboard the next Shuttle mission and installation on the International Space Station. It may not be the last. NASA's Robonaut 2 (R2), planned to be launched to the International Space ... more |

![]() Washington (AFP) Aug 7, 2010 Two International Space Station astronauts set out Saturday on the first of two spacewalks to fix a cooling pump that dramatically failed last week. ISS astronauts will need at least two spacewalks to remove the failed ammonia pump unit and replace it with a new one after the device failed a week ago. Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson slept in the Quest airlock module overnight to accommodate their bodies to a different pressure and were awakened at about 2:00 am (0600 GMT) to begin final p ... read more |
