NASA plans two challenging spacewalks to fix ISS pump
Washington (AFP) Aug 2, 2010
NASA teams raced Monday to get ready for two challenging spacewalks to fix a pump module on the International Space Station's cooling system that dramatically failed last week. ISS astronauts will need a minimum of two spacewalks to remove the failed ammonia pump unit and replace it with a new one, with the first to take place on Friday, NASA said. Two astronauts held dry-runs for the spacewalks at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) in Houston, where they choreographed what needed to be done ... read more

Space station drama as cooling system fails
Washington (AFP) Aug 1, 2010
A failure of the cooling system on the International Space Station forced astronauts to re-route power Sunday as NASA planned emergency spacewalks to fix the problem. One of two cooling loops shut down Saturday night, triggering alarms throughout the orbiting station, which is manned by three Russian and three American astronauts. NASA said the crew is not in any danger, but an attempt o ... more

No Rings Around Saturn's Rhea
Ithaca NY (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
Something unknown is causing a strange, symmetrical structure in the charged-particle environment around Rhea, Saturn's second-largest moon. But contrary to 2008 reports, it's not a system of rings. Using NASA's orbiting Cassini spacecraft, a team of astronomers led by Cornell research associate Matthew Tiscareno searched for narrow rings, broad rings and any material from dust to giant boulders that might be orbiting the 1,500 km- (950 mile)-wide moon. They report their non-detection in Geo ... read more
